Ava Square-LeVias

Ava Square-LeVias Core Artist/Performer is an arts educator as well as a performing arts practitioner specializing in African dance, percussion and multi-media. As an educator, Ava has promoted performing arts as a teacher, director, workshop presenter, curriculum resource specialist and consultant. Her talents in this arena have been used by numerous organizations and institutions including: U.C. Berkeley, CIIS, Artship, Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame, Oakland, Richmond and San Francisco School Districts; Black Repertory Group and Contra Costa Foster Parents.

Trained in dance, music and theater, Ava has performed and toured as principle dancer or soloist with the following groups or organizations: the award-winning, all-female band, D'Cuckoo as well as Dimensions Dance Theater, Street Sounds, Lillian Allen, CitiCenter Dance Theater, Diamano Coura W. African Dance Co., David Rousseve's "Reality," Sistah Boom and currently with the fabulous all-female group, Ojala.

In dedication to her vision of shared, compassionate and reciprocal community she has traveled throughout the U.S. and internationally and taught many school groups. Her credits as choreographer or director are as follows: Oakland Summer Theater, Oakland Parks and Recreation, Youth Reach and Nuba Dance Theater.

In 1983, Ava founded her own dance company, Spirit Theatre of Dance, which performs throughout the West Coast. In conjunction with the aforementioned touring credits Ms.Square-LeVias has performed for leaders in technology such as Lucent Technologies, Cisco Systems, IBM, Sun MicroSystems and Aveda. A member of the board for BATA Systems (Black American's Training for Adulthood) Ava believes in the rights of all of society's members to an environment that supports learning and growth through participation in the arts. Ms. Square-LeVias holds an MA from California Institute for Integral Studies in Organization Development and Transformation and is currently pursuing a doctorate at CIIS in Transformative Learning.
